Beginning July 1st, the Diocese of Toledo implemented a new on-line, one-stop registration program so that any adult who volunteers with our youth (at St. Michael School and through all parish activities) can complete their needed Protecting Youth requirements through an on-line system called VIRTUS. This requirement pertains to, but is not limited to, adults who volunteer with children in the lunchroom, Discipleship/FROGS, youth group, field trips, classroom helper, coaching, retreats, 8th grade trip, Scouts, nursery, prayer groups, choirs, festival, servers etc.
Effective immediately, any and all adults whose ministry includes any contact with children are expected to complete three (3) on-line components of Protecting Youth registration at VIRTUS which remain on-file for 5 years.
(1) reading and signing an electronic expectation form,
(2) completing a social security number based background check ($25) (through Fastrax) – which replaces fingerprinting (and was previously $50-$60). The parish has generously offered to cover the $25 fee for volunteers if that is necessary.
(3) completing Protecting God’s Children Online Awareness Session 3.0 (also available in Spanish) at no charge, which will take about 75 minutes (formerly the Shield the Vulnerable course was $6).
(If you had fingerprints and/or the Protecting Youth course completed within the last five years, those should still be on file, and should not need to be repeated for 5 years but you will still need to register on the VIRTUS system.)
Please contact Susan Campbell our St. Michael Compliance Officer as soon as possible at firstname.lastname@example.org if your service in our parish includes ministry with children to learn all you need to complete your registration.
We'd like to have all this on file by December 31, 2016.

St. Michael School is blessed to offer a variety of musical experiences for students in grades K – 8.
All students in grades K – 8 participate in General Music Classes. Here are some highlights:
General Music for Kindergarten focuses on singing, beat, matching pitch, vocal explorations and instrument/rhythm explorations. Student in kindergarten perform several musical selections at the Kindergarten Christmas program and at Kindergarten Graduation in May.
Students in 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade general music participate in our early Christmas Musical. All students in grade 3 are given a job for the show (acting, singing, instruments, dancing..etc) and the students in grades 1 and 2 sing and dance to the musical selections.
Students in grade 4 and 5 general music participate in our Spring Musical held in March. The 4th grade students present a recorder concert on this evening. Our 4th and 5th grade chorus share several selections and we end the night with our spring play. Students in 5th grade each receive a job for the show!
Students in grades 6, 7 and 8 participate in general music classes 2 quarters of the year - either 1st and 3rd quarters or 2nd and 4th. During these classes, students are actively involved in studying, performing, writing, analyzing and understanding music. This year all students in grades 6-8 will spend 6 weeks learning about and playing the ukulele and in the spring will also spend several weeks learning about world music through participating in a world drumming ensemble. Students in grade 6 also write their own music, study famous musicians from the baroque, classical and romantic eras and explore music in their daily lives. Students in grade 7 also explore the history of Broadway, review the romantic era through modern composed music, explore music in the movies and deepen their understanding of written music. 8th grade students study the history of jazz and patriotic music through the 20th century. These students also explore different careers in the world of music, how music affects our daily lives, analyze choices and personal preferences to music and compose their own songs in class. There is always something fun going on in the music room!
Band begins in grade 5 and continues through grade 8. Students participate in 2 concerts a year, solo and ensemble contest as well as our end of the year pep rally. Some students also perform for masses or other prayer services through the year. We have 3 bands – 5th grade band, 6th grade band and a combined 7th/8th grade band. We also offer Jazz band and Percussion Ensemble depending on the year and student interest.
Chorus is offered to students in grades 4 – 8. Chorus for grades 4 and 5 meets one period a week, while chorus for grades 6, 7 and 8 meets two periods a week. These students participate in a fall concert and a spring concert, as well as singing for various masses, assemblies and prayer services through the year.
Bell Choir is currently offered to students in grade 8. This ensemble meets after school one day a week for 45 minutes. These students perform for various masses and prayer services, the evening of the arts, various community events and for the bell choir recital.
Drama Club is open to any student in grades 6, 7 and 8. This group meets after school a few days a week during the first quarter and performs 2 evening productions of a music at the beginning of quarter 2. Any student who auditions will earn a part on the stage.
